THE VISITORS’ CENTER AT MAUNA KEA

Hawaii’s clear skies excite astronomers with the possibilities of discovering new and never before seen inter-galactic  bodies.  Mauna Kea is a special place, a sacred place that connects the earthbound to infinity.  The best time to visit is just before sunset.  Scientists working at the huge telescopes set up smaller ones and bring the wonders into focus.  There are videos to watch, hot cocoa to keep you warm and knowledgeable people to answer your questions and share your awe.  Off of Saddle Road, loosen your gas cap as you ascend to the 9,000-foot level to equalize the pressure in your gas tank.  Be sure to tighten it on your descent.  Dress very warmly---it’s windy with the temperatures in the low 30s.  THERE ARE NO SPACES BETWEEN THE STARS!  The Visitors Center closes at 9:00pm.

THE PETROGLYPH FIELD IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

At the bottom of Chain of Craters Road, a very unassuming sign points out the Petroglyph Field.  A clear trail leads you in and it doesn’t take you very long before the hair on your body stiffens and your skin begins to tingle.  Pause and let your eyes and soul sweep from the lava cliffs to the rugged coastline.  As you focus closer, spread out at your feet are THOUSANDS OF PETROGLYPHS memorializing the ancestors and their families and occupations.  Walk softly and carefully and feel their presence in the wind.  Very few people are around and there is little shade.  Dress to protect yourself, wear closed-toe shoes and bring a bottle of water.  The early morning is best for viewing.

NANI SVENDSEN’S ANCESTORS VALLEY AT KEOKEA IN NORTH KOHALA

An invitation is extended for a visit to this most special place being reclaimed by Nani Svendsen as a project of love and healing.  Taro is carefully tended and the valley abounds with growing things .  By appointment only.  Call Nani at 808-889-5572

PALEAKU GARDENS PEACE SANCTUARY IN CAPTAIN COOK

It is a known fact that Nature assists the Soul.  This is a place where the mission of the organization is to “offer a sanctuary  for the advancement of individuals toward peace and harmony.”  A unique international botanical garden that honors the Native American and Eastern philosophies, it also caretakes the treasured archaeological sites within its boundaries.  Call 328-8084 for more information.  A donation is appreciated.
