The beautiful logo on our website was created by Tutu Wahine Alexia Carvalho. There is great meaning and symbolism behind the kalo/taro logo we have selected to represent our Big Island circle. Whether dry land or wet, the kalo plant is a closed system with nothing wasted; every part of the plant relying on the other for life. TUBER (Inner Self / Soul) - Represents the part unseen, the Soul and the Spirit. In the plant, this is the part that puts out the roots and holds the plant steadfast. It is the place where nourishment is taken in so that growth is strong and steady. It is consumed as a basic, staple food. UPPPER TUBER (Body) - The part used for planting and multiplying. It represents the close circle of family and friends, the 'ohana. This part of the plant is the bridge between what is seen and what is not. It is also edible but carefully held aside for replanting so that there is no lack. STEM AND LEAVES (Community) - This part represents what is seen. It stands for the larger community. The leaves are very beautiful, edible and nutritious. It receives the sun's light and carries it to the tuber to stimulate growth. |
